Self carving statue

By cceccles
This statue stands by the harbour in Stonington, Deer Isle, and to me it looks like he is carving himself out of the granite.

In fact it is a tribute to the people who have worked on Deer Isle granite, which was widely used as a building material in the north-eastern US until concrete took over.

Deer Isle granite is still used today, for kitchen countertops and other uses.

The image was taken looking into the sun so used a little fill-in flash and a bit of curves adjustment in PS to bring out the detail. Some info about the statue in V2.

Hope you enjoy.

You have done well with this, Chris: for you to be able to bring out the detail, the detail must first be there. The statue is remarkable (and the information invaluable); I appreciate monuments to the Common Man rather than the usual general or statesman!

Love this one, as you say he seems to be in the process of carving himself out of the stone.

Excellent use of fill in flash to bring out the detail Chris - I like the quirky creative title too!
