I remember commenting on your last shot; welcome back.

This is quite nice, good exposure, nice colours. I have to wonder though why you didnt turn the camera horizontally and take a landscape for mot sot. Its possible there were thinks in the way I dont know about, and I also think you really wanted the full cloud included.

Another possibility would have been to use a wider focal length.

Nice as it is, it can look best as a landscape format image.

Ive uploaded 2 mods, and I did some fiddling to lower that clound and not crop it; second mod is flipped horizontally for a different look.

Nice find

Regards

Willie

Hi interesting thanks for the comments and mods. I cropped from landscape wanting to give equalish weight to cloud and hut, emphasising the two subjects by closing the frame to portrait. Balance and calmness were my aims. Thanks again.

Thank you for stating what you wanted to achieve Peter, very few do that here which makes critique more difficult.

Landscape format is more calming.
However, so is simplicity which is what you have here, that's an attractive cloud positioned nicely (ok you have little or no control over that apart from moving your position and waiting but that's all part of the game).
That said, the lighting is quite flat and this scene would benefit from light more from one side or the other. Not too dramatic perhaps if you want calmness but you don't want calm to be overtaken by boring.
I think I'd even go more letterbox than Willie's mod.

Wow thanks. Ummmm boring, flat light, seems I have some rethinking to do.....I shall hear views from a photo group tomorrow night so without prompting it'll be an interesting evening. Thanks again.

There's a little something about this that unsettles me very slightly, and I'm not quite sure what it is... But it contradicts the concept you've laid out.

Either landscape or square would give a more stable (and thus, probably, calm) look, I think. The cloud adds a lot, definitely.

I'm not sure if more dramatic lighting would add to the calm, or disturb it.

Is there a tiny lean back to the hut (having posted a tilted sea myself, yesterday, I know this is about pots and kettles, but...)

Thanks for the reply Peter.
Don't get me wrong, 'boring' is rather a strong term, for example flat light as in overcast is wonderful for allowing you to bring out detail. Frontal light, even bright sun, gives a flat look, that is, not three dimensional (think direct on camera flash, too).
Have something to kep the viewer's interest, hold their attention, they'll relax.
