Sheffield City Centre

By foznoth
I've been interested in street photography for quite a while now, so walking around Sheffield recently, I saw this scene, with the clouds, light & people.
As a relative beginner in this field I'd like people's opinions.

Welcome to Ephotozine Steven.

Interesting shot. I dont know if youve done a lot of post processing with it. Its shot into the Sun, so its obviously underexposed, though the clouds look good. What I do notice though is that passing bus and its sign, and Im wondering if you were going for a Night of the Living Dead look!

Also love that Hot Sausage Company stall.

So it works if thats as intended, though for the critique, I will assume you might prefer some more light in the darker areas, while maintaining contrast.

So Ive uploaded a mod, - scroll up to the modifications tab and click, with work done to extract highlight detail, - mostly in the lower area; convert it to mono, - there a hint of colour in this, and slightly sharpen the tower.
Convert you files to sRGB when uploading to the web, - even mono shots, as it helps some non colour managed browsers to interpret the image properly. It wont make a mono become coloured!

Hope this is helpful,

regards

Willie

Hi Stephen, welcome to Epz.
Willie's covered pretty much everything.
The only thing I'd add is that you'll probably receive some flak for using a logo. Most of us aren't concerned by them, others will tell you to remove it.
Personally, I'm one of the former and of the opinion that it's your image and your choice.
A good first upload.

Cheers,

Bren.

Welcome to EPZ Steven. You have shot a very striking image and you did very well to shoot it or present it in black and white. It is a perfect street photography example for me. I shall also congratulate you for choosing to shoot a landscape with a vertical frame. The picture contains all the important elements, the town-(hall?) the coffee-shop on wheels, the pedestrians, the stonework and the bus! (unfortunately it contains the city centre help point pillar, which instantly arks the picture in the 21rst century (try cropping it to see how it looks without it). All elements fitted in a very limited space! Using a wide lens is the cause for the clock tower to appear leaning a bit to the right, if I am not mistaken. In a nutshell I think the pic is awesome. Since I can't vote it, I shall take off my hat to you.

I find it a bit grey. Almost HDR in tonal range. Good composition the the lighting does lead to apparent under exposure, but would prefer a bit brighter image.
