Shifting light

By dpenman
Death Valley dunes at sunset. I was drawn to the quickly shifting light as I hiked across the dunes. I had to react fast to a scene, as it changed so fast. Enjoy.

Can't fault the composition. My only critique would be the white sky.

Nice abstract but I can't believe how white the sky looks like, was it so much white?

Could have been better if clouds were not really white but still a beautiful image. One of my dream shots!

The back ground sky was a light grey/tan in color, as a dust storm had pickup and a massive wall of sand/dust was headed my may, not uncommon there in Death Valley. The grey wall was without any detail and really sucked the life out of this otherwise killer image, so I opted to make the sky brighter then it was and made it white. Thanks for all your comments.

The foreground is, indeed, superbly recorded, the sky, even if it was so bland, is a bit of a let down I fear. Needs some tone to balance the dunes. You seem to have decided how good the image is, so why the critique section.

I love the shapes that the light & shade have created, this must have been a sight to behold !
The expanse of white above does spoil this as a reportage image but...may work as an abstract print, where the viewer has to look deeper to make out what the subject is as the shapes are so very fascinating.
The small triangle of lighter colour bottom left could do with removing imho in order to make this a very clean, graphic image.
I like the central line of contrast which draws me upward to the top of the dune....a nice line of Camels & riders would have really put the lid on this image Wink
Why not try dropping a bit of a gradient onto the white sky on top of your original,it may or may not work but would certainly be worth having a go.

Just a thought have you tried it in B&W?
Mike.
