Shipwreck

By geoffrey baker
This is the wreck of the Helvetia, caught in a storm on 1st November 1887 and washed ashore on Rhossili beach on the Gower coast, West Wales.

She was heavily laden with 500 tons of timber and managed to reach the safety of Rhossili Bay and dropped anchor in the shelter of Worm's Head but the storm changed direction during the night, she dragged anchor and became shipwrecked.

Taken yesterday, it wasn't the best of sunsets, I would've prefered it without that big dark cloud obscuring the colours but I had to make do with the cards I was dealt as they say.

Good to see you weren't lured away to the hills by the covering of snow they had Geoff. A much photographed scene which you have captured extremely well indeed, a truly cracking low light capture, and an excellent addition to your portfolio.

I'm stunned, been sitting here for 20 minutes just staring at the screen, cant believe I've actually had that elusive HC, thankyou very much Pete, this means so much to me, it really does.

I'd fallen asleep infront of my PC earlier, it's been a long day, so I hope this is not just a dream, although I dont see any naked ladies or sheep so I guess it isnt ;o)

There are quite a few people on here that have given me inspiration and encouragement and I thank you all, I've learned a little off each of you.

Last but not least I'd like to thank the person without whose help I wouldnt have been awarded this HC, Andrew Roberts (Proberts), my photography was going nowhere when he gave me a masterclass in his Photoshop techniques and, well, I havent looked back since, thankyou Andrew :o)

Well, I think that the cloud really made this one better. It adds extra drama without taking anything away from the other fine parts of this photo. LOL - And don't forget to thank the 'little people' who made this possible!

this is very nice. I love how the light shimmers in the pools around the shipwreck itself. I like that you included a wee bit of history in the description too. congrats on the HC!

thankyou for your email Geoff. I read it wrong..thought you meant 1987 when we had the hurricane. Well if it meant getting an email from you it was worth it! at least you only ridiculed me in the email and not on here!
