Shooting some hoops

By tom_earwaker
Took this in the Ping Shek Estate in Hong Kong last week. Didn't do much editing, a bit of selective brightening and darkening mainly.
Thanks for looking!

I like this a lot. It's very clever use of portrait format, and beautifully timed for the player's move. It's all about reaching upwards, whether architecture or humans.

I've uploaded a very quick upload. Checking against the grid confirmed my initial suspicion that there's a tilt - best to look at the vertical nearest the centre of the frame. Get that line right and everything else 'sits' comfortably.

I'm also surprised by the considerable minus exposure compensation that you used - it wasn't required here - and I'm surprised that it didn't have greater effect! I've lightened very slightly.

Really attractive. And one thing I definitely don't want to do is adjust perspective! Converging verticals really convey the height of the buildings.

I saw the tilt, and wondered... I think I prefer the tilted version, and my mod will tilt further, to see if that adds more 'aspiration' to the shot. There's a real 'reaching for freedom' mood here.

This may be influenced by the fact that I learned that a bit of a tilt is called the Dutch Angle or Dutch Tilt a couple of days back. I'll let you judge...

I agree with Moira about the whole idea of reaching up, Tom. It all comes together so nicely, with the tall buildings, goal, lamp posts, the man reaching up high, and your vertical format. I'm so glad he wore black, corresponding with the goal, creating a balance.

The sun creeping through the tree on the left keeps pulling my eye, but that could easily be cloned out. I wouldn't want to crop it because your frame looks very good. Looking at Moira's modification, it appears that her straightening has removed the flare anyway.

I wonder what you think of John's tilt. It certainly adds a bit more drama. If you chose to use this tilt, I would clone out the part-man on the right.
What a lot of interesting potential this image has.

Thanks everyone. I actually nearly cropped off the top half of this shot and made it landscape, but glad I didn't! It definitely helps to have that 'reaching up' idea with the portrait format. I like the tilt, makes it a bit more dynamic and makes my eye settle on the boy and then go up and left from him. Without the tilt my eye gets dragged left and down sometimes (although less in moira's mod), which loses some of the upwards movement.

I think you should have cropped. the triangle of white sky is very eye pulling and needs to go. I would have cropped half way down the buildings, but otherwise I like it.
