Shot Glass Fountain

By EddieAC
When I joined the two challenge groups last year it had the effect of getting me to upload more photos to this site and especially to my portfolio. The number of images in my portfolio has doubled in that time and I have been on this site for 11 years now.

A recent macro challenge themed "New" got me to try something that I had thought about but had not got around to it. A challenge themed "Water" got me to do the same. Around a year or so ago I bought a pack of coloured plastic shot glasses. I had the idea of stacking several of them and photographing them while I poured water from a tap into the top one and the water would overflow onto the ones below like a fountain.

I hadn't got around to doing it though. I had thought about the best way to light it and considered that the best way was from below and had to come up with a way of placing a sheet of glass over a container containing my desk lamp and have the water flowing while making sure I did not fry myself in the process. The Black & White challenge kick started me into finally trying it and I was relieved to find out after shooting around 34 images that there was not a drop of water inside the container where my desk lamp was situated.

I tried different shutter speeds and made use of an ND filter to slow the shutter speed to around 8 seconds but I preffered the results I got from shutter speeds between 1/15sec to 1/60sec.

So one thing that I have learned from joining the groups is that if I have an idea then just make some time and have a go at it. It may or may not work but knowledge will be gained from trying.
