I would imagine that without them and wind changed direction you could get soaked walking along the road. I find the colour version is my favourite especially the back lighting on the glass brings out all the details better than the mono.

Two lovely images of a very attractive and unusual feature; for me it's the colour image as it makes the most of the light and colours.
