Lots of people habitually use this annoying and uncomprehending expression.
For a "simple" composition to be made "effective" it requires a truly creative imagination and understanding, experience, and a greater than average talent, because your abilities ( or shortcomings ) are exposed and there's nowhere to hide if you get it even slightly wrong.
It's the use of the word "but." It sounds so condescending.
