The secret of using a real camera is to pick the venue - and it helps if the performer has done a house concert at your place (lovely 60th birthday present from my son, a few years back).
Folk clubs and other small venues, avoiding any hint of flash, and, ideally, a silent shutter... Even in noisier styles of music, it is worth getting to know one or two people, look for opportunities, go to gigs that are not busy...
The opportunity to do THIS shot came from a casting call on Purpleport - but I suspect venues like Robin2 and Upfront will usually be happy to let you shoot, if you ask nicely and let them/the band have pictures.
