I love the full scene version, the sideways glance of the main pic has found target on V1! I suppose I like it because it tells the "whole story" . I will have a look around about their music, they seem to perform the type of music that I can happily tune in.

The secret of using a real camera is to pick the venue - and it helps if the performer has done a house concert at your place (lovely 60th birthday present from my son, a few years back).
Folk clubs and other small venues, avoiding any hint of flash, and, ideally, a silent shutter... Even in noisier styles of music, it is worth getting to know one or two people, look for opportunities, go to gigs that are not busy...
The opportunity to do THIS shot came from a casting call on Purpleport - but I suspect venues like Robin2 and Upfront will usually be happy to let you shoot, if you ask nicely and let them/the band have pictures.

The three bands I regularly shoot have me on their authorised list at venues, so never any bother. As John says, never use flash, and silent shutter if the performance is of of a quieter nature.
