Sighting Box

By gingerdelight
A few words of explanation about today's upload, once again taken yesterday at Herrington Country Park near Sunderland (the monument in the distance is Penshaw Monument, a very famous landmark in these parts!). As a V2 I thought I'd try and depict what this might look like at night!!:

On the central hill of the park is a stone circle with seven steel sighting boxes strung between the stones, one for each line of sight. Take a look through the square openings, or for smaller children, through the holes in the metal work to see each focus point. The name of each point is etched into a steel plate, on the boulders next to each sighting box, along with the distance you are away from it

(Taken from a PDF issued by Sunderland City Council)

Also, for those interested in yesterday's seat:

This seat (Sun), part of a group of seats based on the elements, were commissioned by Sunderland City Council and constructed by a group of artists named ‘strata’ ............................ other pieces from this group – rain, wind and snow.

Thanks for all your continued support!

What a great idea, Carol, and a great way for young children to learn about their local landmarks. Well captured. Carol

After living in Northumberland and the North East for 35 years one still has many fond memories, as well as family and friends in the area. Penshaw Monument has over the years grown to be a landmark that we always look out for indicating that we are almost back to what I still think of as as being home, even-though I have lived in Kent for 15 years.

That's the strangest view of the Penshaw Monument that I've ever seen. And definitely even stranger in moody b&w.

What a great idea to have viewing boxes to focus on landmarks.
The image you've taken depicts the idea very well and frames
Penshaw Monument which I don't know at all.
It is very powerful in mono.

You lined this up well to make a good composition, Carol and the mono works well for me due to the strong shapes.
