Sinaia: Peles Castle & Park 11

By gss
The park
There are 2 main areas: the park or the domain, and the terraces.
The park is concieved in an landscaping romantic style with large meadows, a free plan, that recompose a natural landscape, with a great variety of trees and shrubs. In May-June there's a shrub that give a very powerful and beutiful perfume. I have discovered this shrub also at the Royal Palace in Bucharest ( today National Museum of Art) ( all I know it has a very light green leaves, as you have a half mix between dark green and white paints). The 7 terraces, modified between 1906-14, are planned in a French-Italian conception ( inspired by Le Notre gardens).
Around the castle we have 3 sides with terraces: north, east and south ( the western side is the slope of the mountain): all have about 7500 square meters. There are several statues ( 2 copies from Italy, - Piazza della Signoria, Florence and the Villa Medici in Rome, done bu Italian artist Raffaeli Romanell)i, the bronze statues of King Carol I and Queen Carmen Sylva, several statues of Roman Emperors, marble stairs and handrails. Queen Mary, a great flower lover, had here an impressive flower collection, especially roses. For all initial works were excavated 100 000 cubic meters of earth and rocks ( with them was build a tenis terrain surface and a military platform in the neighborhood. All alleys and paths were illuminated. From the park start wonderful views of the rocky peaks of mountains Bucegi.
Here, the south-eastern terraces, a view from the entrance.
on the official website you can see 4 virtual tours of the terraces ( north , east , south , and the inner courtyard )

Dave, even now it's very special. It's not a "patriotic" feeling, but I saw in my life a lot of castles in Spain, France, Germany, Italy, Hungary, etc. less or more famous, Romania have some impressive medieval castles too, but here I feel different ( everything is converging to that - landscape, smells, nature, air, architecture, art, and something I can't precise.) If sometime you will travel to Romania, is an obligatory destination.
Thanks for your comments Dave
