Sinaia Houses - 1

By gss
These days I discovered that on the net there are lots of free vector drawings and fonts to download so I became to play with them... Maybe some pictures are too ornate to my taste, but as I told, these collages are like exercises.
A series with Sinaia Mountain Resort, one of the most famous in Romania.
Before 1695, only some sheepfold and dens of highway robbers were in this wonderful valley of Prahova river, in the Southern Carpathians (125 km north from Bucharest). In 1695 was built the Sinaia Monastery, by a nobleman of Wallachia, Mihai Cantacuzino after a pilgrimage at Mount Sinai, in Egypt; so after this biblical mountain he gave the name of the monastery. After 1866, at the arrival of King Carol I, was built near the monastery the Peleş Castle, and, further the other 2 castles and the whole Royal Domain. That event boosted the high and middle classes in that Romania to built private villas - many of them in a similar style with the Royal Domain. So appeared Sinaia town, called today the Pearl of the Carpathians. Not only very rich people had their own villa, but also teachers, doctors, independent workers, as Romania got an accelerated growth between 1900-1947. After the communism arrival, all properties were nationalized and became touristic units for accommodation. Since 1990, an inverse process is on the way, to give back those villas; but as the process is slow and difficult, a parasitic phenomenon has made its way: heirs of former owners have sold to a a mafia of immovable property the "rights litigations", for some little money but fast, and the latter, once they get the houses, or they demolish them to build something big and insipid or they mutilate them; there are few cases when they are returned to their old brilliance.
The last 3 collages are from the former Royal Stables, built on the Furnica mountain (furnica = ant), which became after the fall of the monarchy, a splendid hotel (it was put into service for 20 years to the Architect Union, so many of my colleagues have spent many holidays there). But do not know how and why, in the past 10 years, was closed and entered in a decay phase (probably due a patrimonial cause).

As always, a fascinating documentary of the history of your country. The architecture is so beautiful, I would think the owners would want to preserve it, they don't make it like this any more!
