Moira,
An absolute stella engineer. I have had the pleasure of working with the firm over the years. He was extraordinary and was probably more responsible for that bridging between architecture and engineering than any other person. The other great engineer of course was Peter Rice who worked for Ove. He designed the Pompidou Centre with Richard Rogers and Renzo Piano.

Tony, we lived alongside the bridge for a while in the early 70s, it's a part of me in a way.
Alan:
Quote:The close juxtaposition of his graceful Kingsgate footbridge and his hideous Dunelm House is something that even after all these years I can't rationalize aesthetically.
Maybe I'm missing something.
I think Dunelm was a solution to a difficult site. If only it was brick it might have weathered better - there is something particularly unlovely about dirty concrete. It's growing on me now that it is under threat, it's a part of our past...

Quote:I find this somewhat macabre. It reminds me of the historical displaying of heads of those convicted of treason. Perhaps I've been reading too many historical novels lately!
Interesting thought. We have been watching the BBC Shakespeare productions from the 1980s on DVD, the Wars of the Roses plays have rather a lot of severed heads. Architecture may be a more dangerous profession than I had thought...

Nah ..... it's Philip Larkin. 🤣
'They chuck you up these arty types
And then they leave you, it's a fact!
It's all a lot of half-baked hype
What's worse my flaming' specs are cracked.' *
With profound apologies to anyone who may have been affected by any of the issues. 🥴
Cracking image by the way! 🤣 🏆
