Sir Ove Arup 2

By mrswoolybill
Another angle on the bust of the architectural engineer beside his favourite project, Kingsgate footbridge in Durham.
Thanks for looking,
Moira

I think he needs sunglasses for a day like that.

Moira,
An absolute stella engineer. I have had the pleasure of working with the firm over the years. He was extraordinary and was probably more responsible for that bridging between architecture and engineering than any other person. The other great engineer of course was Peter Rice who worked for Ove. He designed the Pompidou Centre with Richard Rogers and Renzo Piano.

The close juxtaposition of his graceful Kingsgate footbridge and his hideous Dunelm House is something that even after all these years I can't rationalize aesthetically.
Maybe I'm missing something.

Tony, we lived alongside the bridge for a while in the early 70s, it's a part of me in a way.

I think Dunelm was a solution to a difficult site. If only it was brick it might have weathered better - there is something particularly unlovely about dirty concrete. It's growing on me now that it is under threat, it's a part of our past...

Do the council employ someone who is tasked with keeping his glasses clean, so that he can see clearly?

Thanks everyone, and thanks to Bob for the UA.
I've now prepared a cropped down version, shadow only, which will appear some time - can't understand why I didn't think of that in the first place...

Taken at the right moment for his glasses to cast their own shadow, but does give him a Pinocchio nose! Good point-of-view with nice mono tones.

I find this somewhat macabre. It reminds me of the historical displaying of heads of those convicted of treason. Perhaps I've been reading too many historical novels lately!

Interesting thought. We have been watching the BBC Shakespeare productions from the 1980s on DVD, the Wars of the Roses plays have rather a lot of severed heads. Architecture may be a more dangerous profession than I had thought...

a strong shadow shot with a great shadow projection angle
the diagonal lines on the wall keep it well balanced
beautiful textures too

Nah ..... it's Philip Larkin. 🤣

'They chuck you up these arty types
And then they leave you, it's a fact!
It's all a lot of half-baked hype
What's worse my flaming' specs are cracked.' *

With profound apologies to anyone who may have been affected by any of the issues. 🥴

Cracking image by the way! 🤣 🏆

* From the first draft of 'This be the worst' (later extensively revised). 🥴 😲

Dear God, Mrs Trellis is waxing poetical! Thanks Graham, for the UA and the laugh. I wonder if Sir Ove ever realised that he looked like Philip Larkin? To be honest, I hadn't noticed until you were kind enough to mention it...
They muck you up, these architects...
