Sister Act

By Johnnybairdphotography
Climbing a Munro is definitely on my bucket list, but unfortunately after a trip to The Highlands that box still remains un-checked. After losing a day to heavy rain, plans to summit Stob Coire Raineach (far left) looked unlikely. Without a doubt a shot of the dramatic northern ridges of Bidean nam Bian, known as The Three Sisters, was on the to do list. To escape the coach loads and find a good vantage point, elevation was needed, presenting another opportunity to press on and see how high we could climb before sunset. May we make that Munro after all?

Climbing Am Bodach we made it to around 800 850 metres, some 100 metres or so from the summit before picking out an area for sunset. It was a little disheartening to be so close to the Munro summit, but things turned into a bit of a scramble and carrying a panorama tripod head (with a scene this great, its got to be panorama!) left me virtually one armed. All disheartenment went out the window when the sun dipped below the horizon, lighting up the wisps of cloud above The Three Sisters (left to right - Beinn Fhada, Gearr Aonach and Aonach Dubh) another dose of Irish luck in Scotland! As the sun slipped further away little torchlights began to appear on the mountains as climbers began their evening descent. A bit of a surreal experience to see people descending between Gearr Aonach and Aonach Dubh, a rather hairy descent Id imagine. Luckily for us our trip back down was a bit more straightforward, a little bounce in our step from a good afternoon.

Jeez, you picked a hell of an area for your 1st Munro! So many ways to go wrong in there, even in good conditions.
