Smokey and the bandits at twelve o' clock ...

By Ericsamson
First of all many thanks for the votes and comments on yesterday's upload and to Tooma for his generous UA. Clearly I was experiencing one of my many moments of sublime (?) bafflement when I posted the image and then apologised for having posted it before. I hope you will all bear with me as I'm 93 years old and have been for many years now. For the sake of clarity then, I HAD posted the image to the portfolio but NOT to the gallery. Panic? I nearly shot myself! Blush (Just checking the spelling there as I occasionally have problems with irritable vowel syndrome.) Moreover, the reference to my 'trusty old service revolver' should have read 'rusty unserviceable garden roller'.
Hope you all have a lovely weekend, I'm off for some more therapy. G Smile

Great image of this Boeing B-17 Flying fortress, Graham
Your shutter speed of 1/1600sec has rendered the propeller blades static
To get a prop blade blur switch from AV (aperture priority) to TV (shutter priority) & set the shutter speed to 1/250sec

IVS - brilliant. Great shot, should make it back to Blighty on three engines, so long as they get the fire out. Enjoy your therapy, Graham. A few drams of choice whisky will likely do the job. Smile

Love the angle and the comp is good.

Brian is right about the shutter speed, but I would suggest working your way down to 1/250th (and beyond) over time as your panning improves. Dialling in a slower shutter speed is going to result in blurred images if your panning technique needs work.

Also no one wants to come away from an airshow with no sharp shots so take a few at 1/1000th, then once you have some keepers lower it down to 1/400th which will give you some blur and see if you can still keep the aircraft sharp. If you get that to work start lowering it even further.

For helicopters you need to go even lower than that so a mono pod can help.

I shoot around 1/100th if I can, but I delete many more than I keep so don't get disheartened.
