Smokey Sunrise, Urambi Hills, Canberra

By BobinAus
The double crest of Urambi Hills gives fine views of the Murrumbidgee Valley and Mt Tennant to the south west and the commercial buildings and suburbs of Tuggeranong to the south east of the Australian Capital Territory. The intense colour of this sunrise is partly caused by smoke from fuel reduction burns conducted to reduce the danger of summer bushfires. Nowadays, much of south east Australia is covered by a blanket of smoke from these burns each autumn.
This picture is a pano merge of three exposures.

Thanks Arne. The dawn light is orange because the sun is shining through smoke from bush fires. Every autumn, the authorities light fires in the bushland to reduce the amount of fuel in the forests. Their goal is reduce the risk of serious bushfires next summer. Bob

Thanks for your comment, Walt. ĎMountainousí is a generous term, especially in comparison with the Canadian Rockies. Those rounded hills in the background rise only 400 to 800 metres above the valley. But it is pretty country, when there is no smokey haze to mar the view.

Thanks Colleen. If more rain falls during winter, the hills will be beautiful in spring.
