Smooth Surprise

By keith selmes
This is taken with an antique, unnamed, brass barrelled petzval lens, approximately 100mm and f/3. The smallest washer is inserted, giving about f/12.5.
I was surprised to get a reasonable sharpness, whilst also getting very smooth rendition and particularly smooth out of focus areas.
One to use again, more thoughtfully perhaps, this was, comparitively speaking a quick snapshot.

Update: I've been using the Petzval lens on a 5D more recently, as well as on large format cameras. There's a picture of the lens here

the foreground iris has an almost 3D quality to it. Good colour and clarity.

this is quite stunning, to see this flower with a more muted colouring is very, very refreshing.

Thank you for those very quick responses.
So good to have confirmation it isn't just a personal opinon - the old lens really does work. On a digital camera!
