Snowman Santa

By AndyD999
Started to practise taking studio style shots over christmas and this was one of the first things that i came across. I have taken the shots in the conservatory to get the best overall light and have used the flash inbuilt in on my camera with a piece of paper over the flash to hold back the harsh light. I then altered the image ever so slightly on photoshop to ensure that the background was as black as possible. Any thoughts?

Hi Andy,

You don't say just how you blackened the background but I've uploaded a mod. in which I've blackened it completely.
Firstly, I selected the black aqrea using the magic wand set to 50, then I filled it using the erm, fill tool, making sure that black was in the foreground.
I've also increased the vibrance quite a bit, reduced the brightness and added some contrast.
I didn't do so but ideally, you'd now need to tidy up the edges with the clone tool.
Hope this helps.

The snowman has good detail and colour, Andy, and I would say that your practise picture has been successful. The only area that is undefined is along his middle, the gold "buttons" on the white. You have placed him central in the frame, and if you choose to go further with still lifes, you might like to consider your composition and also have something else of interest in the frame. I have done a modification where I simply added some stars to the background of Bren's modification, offset the snowman and added a bit more canvas at the bottom.

That's better still Pamela!

It occurred to me after I'd modded this, that I'd used the "magic wand" to select the background.

The "quick selection tool" would have done a better job.

I placed a black piece of card behind the snowman for my back drop. I love you mod Pamela and it has certainly given me a few ideas to think about. Many thanks
