"Something Old, Something New" - 2

By RonnieAG
Perhaps you'll spot yesterday's image towards the left of V 1.
V 2 is posted for those who might feel the drain pipes are a distraction and ought not to be part of the image.
I'll be interested to see which you prefer.
Personally I prefer V 1.
Both images were captured in the stable courtyard in Pollok Country Park, Glasgow.

My thanks as ever for all the nice comments on Something Old, Something New - 2.

Each stands as a great image Ronnie but I must admit to
liking the one with pipes included.
Normally I go for 'perfect images' but the pipes add a 'Je ne sais quio'.
Hope my French spelling passes the test!
also it makes me feel I must get over to Pollock Park very soon.
When we were there earlier in year there was very little colour.

V1 Ronnie! The drain pipes are part of the building, they also add more textures to this excellent upload.

If you hadn't have uploaded V2, I'd have liked V1. Now, given the choice, I will go for V2. It's well balanced, and my attention seems to fall more upon the old door.

Thank you for your early morning comments.......I will be interested to see which version is preferred.
I guess it sometimes difficult to know what to include and what to omit, and it begs the question...."What is the subject and focal point?"
Here I found it difficult to decide so chose to take both options.

Just love that grotty door Ronnie.
Prefer the tighter crop of V2 for that !!
Super shot.
(Yes Ronnie, the Fringe can be ''hard going'' with all the people there.Have to say I have struggled a bit this year with my shortage of breath after walking about for a while. You need to be lucky and find a bollard that the performers are not using to have a little rest !!)

I love both of your images Ronnie. The drain pipes certainly add to both
compostions. The textures, colours and general look of the old stone work
together with the old gate make it all and give it impact…

What wonderful textures and colours in both images, Ronnie. Have gone to and fro and still can't decide which I prefer! Probably down to viewing at such a silly hour of the night!!!

Both versions are excellent but prefer V2 as it eliminates the distraction. In my opinion the door is the focal point given the tight crop on left flower pot and the hanging basket brackets/chains. Detail on the door and stone work is excellent.

I think V.1 gets my vote, Ronnie, though both are grand presentations. What a wonderful display of flowers. Carol

Two great images. Like Ann I shuttled between them both before
settling for V1. The drainpipes for me add that little bit more interest
and tells a whole different story from V2.

I am the same, but decided on V1 because I really like that stone above the door and the colour of it and you can see it all in V1,
But both are Brilliant

An intetresting poser, Ronnie. On its own v2 looks good but when you put them side by side v1 seems to have a more natural balance and sits easier on the eye. I strugle to work out why. The drain pipe seem to act like the spine of a book, or hinge for the door that is the image, and the door within the image echoes that (a bit like an arch within an arch) - a bit early in the morning but I hope I not talking gibberish!

Well Ronnie as said above both would stand on their own. However when put side by side and compared it poses a problem. The drain pipes in V1 do add that little extra, so by the smallest imaginable margin V1. Please don't do this again to us Ronnie Smile

Going with V2 Ronnie - the ancient grotty door being beautified by the hanging baskets makes a grand image. If you hadn't put this one up I would have been delighted with the drainpipe one. You win either way.WinkWinkWink

V1 for me because I think the drain pipes are very much a part of the decrepid old building.
15 Aug 2012 10:17AM
V1 for me Ronnie i have often passed through the courtyard and thought it could do with a bit of work but then again it has its charms the way it is

Both are good but I prefer 1, as the drain pipes add more interest for my eye. with the title being something old something new, the pipes give your picture a lot more old to look at, and I really like the fern growing from them.

Seems odd that they should put up such lovely hanging baskets around a grotty door like that...but then, if I'd been around since 1745 I'd be looking pretty grotty! Wink A fine capture, Ronnie, and V1's my fave Smile

Just has to be the V1 composition in full Ronnie, as yesterday
I loved he way you captured that fern and now get to see it in a even better viewing
with all the colour and that door that is some door!
definitely V2 for me

I prefer V1. The pipes seem to go with the uneven brickwork.

I simply love this picture and can realize your dilemma faced with making a choice - I had not heard of the fringe, we learn all the time on EPZ -it was hubs bro and his wife that mentioned it as they had a short break in Scotland Reecently

Beautiful colour as always, Ronnie.
Composition.. generally speaking, I do like to see the structure as a whole, and leave the image a "breathing" space..rather than tight crop to make a "stronger" image. I'm not so sure about V2 either.. For me, it has less information from the life, but it is exactly what the argument is...I would like to see what a portrait format looks like at V1's angle either form left or right...
15 Aug 2012 10:25PM
Both excellent in their own right, Ronnie. I think I'm more inclined to the simplicity of v2 though.
16 Aug 2012 10:32AM
V2 Ronnie just prefer the more compact composition, surely one of Glasgow's real gems with flowers like this.
