Not the foggiest how you did this nor how to do it "properly" but what you have is a great result anyway!

Can't help with the technique, I'm afraid, Sandy: quite beyond me! I think you have produced a fine image here, a beautiful backdrop for the rushing dog, and the slight blurring of it's outline helps to create a sense of movement which I find appealing.

More excellent creativity Sandy, you're too hard on yourself, as what you're doing looks great to me, I haven't a clue how to even start on something like this! Agree with what Ronnie says above.

Never really thought of using 'Place', but having just had a go in my PS Elements, it does seem a quicker way of adding another image on top of your background image in a new Layer. May start using it! Anyway, this looks a super creation to me, Sandy, very well done Smile

Excellent image. Works for me, however you put it together.

I've been told by a mate at camera club that the place command doesn't work properly in CS3. I have CS5, & it works fine, but I'm not convinced it would have done what you wanted anyway. The reason I use it is because it saves me some work resizing competition shots. What I do is this.

Create a new black canvas 1024x768 (the size required by the Lancashire & Cheshire Photographic Union).
Open the new file with the "place" command instead of "open".
This places the new file in the centre of the canvas, & automatically resizes it to fit. It also makes it a smart object rather than a normal layer, whatever that means.
Flatten the image.

If that's what you were trying to do, then this is how it should work, but as I said, I don't think that Adobe got it right until at least CS4.

For composites, I find it better to roughly chop out the bit I want, paste it in as a layer, & use a layer mask to fine tune. Probably as you did.

Awesome, the lighting, the composition, and by the way its not how you do things, so much as the end result that counts. Or to put it another way if it is not broken don't fix it.
