Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word

By chase
I borrowed the mannequin and his detached hand some time ago from my next door but one neighbour, he has a few battle scars from a previous life but generally still intact.

My personal challenge was to do some HDR stuff with the Lensbaby and the Sweet 35, I just had to find the right subject and the props to go with it.
So, here he is in all his HDR glory Wink

Lit by daylight camera left.
3 frames combined in Lightroom and finished with a couple of textures in Photoshop.

He made a good model, stayed nice and still and quiet Wink
Possibly not everyones cup of tea but I do quite like the effects.
There is a mono version too....I can't choose between the two Blush

There will be a short series of these.

Thanks for taking the time to call in.
Constructive critique and mods welcome.

The colours are lovely, and add to the atmosphere...

I want him, I want the hand even more. And the sweet spot is perfectly placed. Everything else can drift away.

Difficult if not impossible to choose between the two!
The colour version has lovely soft colours with contrast between the blue/grey tones of the mannequin and background and the red roses. The roses here are more dominant.
The mono version emphasizes more the texture and light on the mannequin, and draws the eye more to this element of the composition.
The lensbaby effect helps draw the eye to the main subject and in the mono version give the roses a translucent appearance.
So you have two excellent images here, giving different interpretations of the still-life. I like them both equally!

They both have very good merits and actually produce two different "Photo Essays". I would suggest a crop at the shoulders to remove the neck, making it look less like a beheaded person.

Many thanks for your User Awards Moira and Richard.

James, I can't decide which I prefer either, they do each have a 'look' of their own but hopefully convey similar emotions.

Moira, he can be loaned out together with hand...I will check his diary Wink

Joline, I tried the top crop, thanks for the suggestion, just didn't work for me, think it's because he has no bottom half, just didn't look right Sad

I like both Janet, but my preference is the B&W mainly because of the human eye-to-brain communication! I like the overall softness of the lead but my brain tells me that the harshness of the B&W is what my eyes want to see.....d'ya get my drift, or have I just gone off on one, lol!! Beautiful composition as always, lovely work.

Thanks Angela, it's always difficult to express what you mean in a message. I do understand where you are coming from though, it did make sense when I had read it a couple of times Wink

I still can't decide Sad

The b&w is my favourite but do really like both. Beautifully arranged still life. I love how your lensbaby blurred parts of this, in the right places. It makes me think of that filter on my camera, the miniature one, if it could do something similar.

I have looked for ages to try and decide....and I can't Tongue
In the colour it makes me feel the hand belongs to a female but in the mono I feel it belongs to the torso ......
All 'armless enough Wink

I find I am drawn towards the b&w conversion...the symbolism of the black rose, symbolizing ideas such as hatred, death, and despair is powerful and captivates my imagination.
A Kilroy for the set-up, composition, choice of lens and not least the imagination to put the whole thing together.

I like your reasoning behind your preference, thanks for that.
I still can't decide, so I am staying liking hem both equally for their differences Wink

I'm liking the coloured image Janet , great impact with the hand and rose, but for me that is lost in the mono. 'Baby' worked well for effect.

B/w for me - splendid composition and the focus is spot on.

Thanks all.
Good job we see things in different ways or everything would be pretty boring.
Great to hear your opinions and your preferences, thanks for that everyone.

James, great to have your UA, very much appreciated.

The mono brings out the composition.....and I think the color. Itself has such simple colors but for the roses.....I need to go,with the color.

The sort of model I like, you don't have to talk to them, they don't shuffle about or get fidgety! 😁 A lovely arrangement and presentation, Janet, looks good in mono too, but have to go for colour 😃👍
