Sotoportego de la Madoneta

By GwailoAngMo
This is one of those bits of Venice I like for its quirkiness. A sotoportego is the Venetian term for a passageway that goes under a building, which the links explains in a little more detail.

I do not claim extensive knowledge of every part of Venice but I cannot recall an adjacent (and in this case narrower) calle immediately next to a sotoportego. The calle lies off picture to the right of the columns and is half the width or less of the sotoportego. They also share the same name. Paolo Giordano in his guide book tells us:

After the bridge is Cale de la Madoneta with an adjoining sottoportico. Halfway down this street, on the left, is another Cale de la Madoneta. The first calle of this name is derived from a small image of the Virgin Mary in the sottoportico, the second is probably named after a sculpture of the same subject at the side of 1977/A.

The ubiquitous Virgin has a lot to answer for.

Nicely done, both versions very appealing.

I like the colour and grain to this Tim. Just like any passageway, there is a little dog cocking his leg whilst his owner walks on oblivious!

I had several stabs at this due to the low light and longer exposures like the 1/15 here. It was not until I was working on the finally selected image in Photoshop I saw the dog.
