Southern Shrike

By Merseyblue
Whilst up Signal Hill, looking at views of Cape Town, this little bird appeared nearby. Typically, I only had a travel camera with me but managed a couple of half-decent shots before the iPhone brigade came racing over to try and get a photo too! Needless to say it didn't stay to sing for us.

The southern fiscal or fiscal shrike is sometimes named jackie hangman or butcher bird due to its habit of impaling its prey on acacia thorns to store the food for later consumption.

Originally, I thought this was a Boubou, having found what I thought was a match, in a South African bird guide. Seems that was a bit of a boubou. Thank you to DaveN and my son Stephen for the correct details. Smile
