Spain #11

We now move inside Sagrada Familia.....I was stunned. The exterior of this fabulous church is known throughout the world as one of the most extraordinary building ever constructed (or as is is...still clearly under construction), but the interior is, as far as I can tell, completed. And as amazing to me as the outside is....the inside may be the most breathtakingly beautiful building interior I have ever seen--or maybe in the world. The images I am showing tonight are mostly extreme wide angle photos--the only way I could capture the form of the inside....and of the upper parts of the interior. I dragged my very bulky (for an Olympus lens, that is) 7-14mm lens with me on this trip----and this was only the first of many times that I was grateful to have it with me. Being able to capture extreme wide angle inside a grand church or mosque (or as the case mostly is in Spain, a mosque captured by the Catholics back when and converted to a church--rarely ever an improvement).

Note in these images how Gaudi (and after his death, his students, and later disciples) have made the interior structure so "light", if such can be said of a huge stone building. His goal, as with the architects of those famous French cathedrals with flying buttresses, was to build a structure as light as possible, letting the windows (another day) be dominant.

And light....the interior is so light and so full of color...from the windows, from the subtle shade and hue differences in the stone work.

And, I would like to thank Walt Knox for h

So glad you have shared these photos. It amazes me how they built such an intricate interior. Those stain glass windows are also amazing. We were on a Cruise ship when we visited Barcelona and the queues were too long to go inside and I had to get back to the ship...there was too much to see in Barcelona only got photos of the outside.
