Spain #39

So, when I see penguins, inevitably, what comes to mind for me is the documentary, March of the Penguins, two scenes in particular...one of the males, in the dead of winter, the wind howling, sanding close together (social non-distance), for community and warmth, keeping the eggs as warm as can be in the dead of an Antarctic winter; the other, when they would go into the water, through the ice (where they really do fly as birds, only under water), in fast and out faster. The seemed to pop out like a champagne cork unleashed. This is not an Emperor Penguin, the Antarctic one....but still in the family.

I would like to thank Walt Knox and John Dudler for their UA's for my wart hog photo from yesterday. And John's quote https://www.ephotozine.com/user/handlerstudio-198963/gallery/photo/spain--38-59243409 worth taking in.....thoughtful and poetic, for the lowly warthog.

Once again, hearts out to our friends in Italy, Spain, Germany, Iran, and the rest of the world as this virus expands. In ways, even as "our" president has closed our borders (to protect Canada from us? We have way more cased than they do), this makes boundaries in the world seem less important.

A few years ago, I remember the BBC putting together a video of penguins in flight for April Fools Day - it was very convincing!!

Penguins are vey accomplished flyers, it's just that the medium they fly in is water rather than air.

Research on the shape of birds eggs reveals a very strong correlation between the amount ov ovalness to flying ability. Peregrines were very oval, and expectedly so. But so were those Emperor Penguins.

And maby penguins don't like, or even know, snow.

This is a Humboldt penguin, native to the warm desert coast of Peru.

I love this image and your commentary about the virus is right on.
I'm obviously avoiding crowds -- finding photo ops in my back yard and in the park.

That was a great movie Peter...superbly narrated by Morgan Freeman.
When I think of penguins . Oddly enough ..two actors from Batman come to mind Burgess Meredith and Danny Devito .I believe Trump and Justin Trudeau jointly agreed to close the border to non essential traffic....dont know the last time this has ever happened 911 I think . Very strange days indeed.
Best regards
Walt
