Spain #54

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I have been saving this group of photos for the right time....I think right now is that time....for Christians and Catholics, today (it is still today in the US) is Palm Sunday, for Muslims, Ramadan is soon to start, and for us Jews, Wednesday night is the start of Passover. For all of us, those who descended from Abrahamic roots, this is a time unlike any other that anyone alive remembers for this time. Our observance is a Seder, a service and meal during which we retell the story of the Exodus, the core story of Jewish history (whether it actually happened or is apocryphal--it is a good story). For many families, we have other family members, friends....the seders can become quite large..and often the same dishes become traditional (I always cook brisket---my mother's famous recipe), and also "ritual foods", charoset, horseradish, matzoh, gefilte fish, matzoh ball soup, parsley......This year, we will all be in our homes....and connecting via Zoom....we will be siting with a laptop or iPad at the table connecting all of us.

So, these images. This is the synagogue in Barcelona that is an archeological site, at also reconsecrated so that services actually can and do take place on Shabbat. Spain, of course, has a pretty dark history with Jewish people, after a certain point. Much later in this series, I will show images from Cordoba, a thousand years ago the largest and most cosmopolitan city in Europe, a Muslim/Christian/Jewish city, as much of Southern Spain was. Jews, of course, in 1492 were expelled from Spain by the Inquisition (which lasted until 1850), but the troubles started much sooner. There were pogroms all over Spain in 1291 against Jews, and it did not improve after that. So, the discovery and restoration of this synagogue at the center of what was the Jewish Quarter is an important part of history. In the version, the front door is quite small...images of the interior, and also of a Judaica store nearby.

For those of you celebrating Easter later this week, you will be having services or Mass in much the same way...for Muslims, Friday sermons also over Zoom. For those celebrating Passover, a good Peach.

In the background, by the window, you will see my wife Karen and stepson, Isaac.

It is a central paradox of religion - and it is not confined to the three brother faiths of the Abrahamic tradition - that what should motivate our best actions towards our fellow-humans is often the spring for the ill-willed to harm others.

The Inquisition.

What is happening between Israel and Palestine.

The Twin Towers...

We are, to quote a now-obscure British politician, better than that. Let's show it, consistently, clearly, and openly. By - among other things - rejoicing together, working together, and even, sometimes, worshipping together.
