Spain #66

By handlerstudio

In the history art, there are single works that change the course of art..of their art forms. Examples...Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, Picasso's great painting in the early 1900s, Bob Dylan's Like A Rolling Stone changed rock n' roll in the 1960s, Henry Fielding's Tom Jones the nature of novels, I am sure there are lots that I am not mentioning.....and this building (with all deference to the judgment of Dimitris who rightly gave an evaluation of Calatrava yesterday, with my thanks) by Frank Gehry changed architecture. The Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. May wife was lukewarm in making a point of going to Bilbao, with a two week stay in Spain and a lot to see....for me, this was not negotiable. We went, and she was glad. We spent a day in Bilbao, getting there in the afternoon and leaving the next afternoon for Seville in the South. This building is so profound that I will take (at least) two days to show it. Today will be images of the exterior. The skin is made from thin sheets of titanium. and this is a building that could really only be designed, and built, with CAD software. One surprise on the exterior is The Puppy...a beloved "sculpture" in front, on the street side of the museum.

Shadows are was a cool, damp, grey day....and started to pour when we were inside.

A unique plasticity of tumors and, despite the huge size of, shows very close to the human scale, without oppressing violently with its volume. The Guggenheim Museum is a gem not only of architecture, but of the world wide civilization and art. An excellent and very interesting collection, Peter!

A building htat could take a long time to photograph... I'm sure that I've read about restrictions on photographing it in the past, which seemed odd at the time. Did you encounter any issues, or explanations for my recollection?

You have done well with these images, but modern architecture leaves me cold. David

John, there were no restrictions at all on photographing the building....though there were on the art inside. The building was designed around an astounding group of monumental Riichard Serra sculptures, of which I have no images. Many photos of the follow.

I am a fan of Gehry.....after seeing the museum of pop culture in Seattle (which had a great Jimi Hendrix display) 10 years ago I became a fan.
The human eye likes a curvy line and Gehry provides plenty !
Like you say it is hard to see how his structures could have built without the aid of computer assisted design .
Stellar set Peter , the plant based dog is impressive
as well.
Best regards
