Splintered Dawn, Empty Storm

By BobinAus
The string of hills, known locally as Mt Lewis, lies between the small towns of Cowra and Canowindra in New South Wales.
When I took this picture almost a year ago, the winter rains had failed and spring was looking pretty lean. The storm clouds caught the dawn light but brought only a few drops of much needed rain. Normally at this time of the year, the pastures are lush and verdant. I doubt that this canola crop would have been worth the trouble of harvesting. Over the last 12 months, the dry spell has become a very serious drought, causing despair for farmers over much of Australia.
The picture itself is a panoramic stitch of five exposures. The dawn colours were spectacular in all directions - fluorescent fall streak, vivid stub rainbows and the long jet of colour shown here. I hardly knew where to point the camera! Despite using using different editing software, I was never really happy with the results. The reissue of Nik‚’s Colour Effects Pro finally helped me to produce the picture I intended.

A lovely pano, Bob, and thanks for the technical info. The weather's been pretty serious here in the South of England, too, but mercifully some rain and more seasonal temperatures are apparently on the way. Cheers, Allan

Thanks for your comment, Allan. I was in Ireland at the end of June when the hot weather that has been plaguing Europe first arrived. I thought I had been teleported back to Australia! The local media have also reported on your heat wave. Im glad youre now getting some relief even if the rainfall remains abnormally low. Cheers, Bob

Thanks a million for your appreciative comment, Ken, and for your concern about the Australian drought. Alas, it's unlikely to break any time soon according to the meteorologists' medium term predictions.
Cheers,

Thanks very much for your kind comments, Vincent. Much appreciated! Your impression of Australia is not wrong at all. It's an arid continent, mainly dry savanna or desert. Almost all the Australian pictures in my portfolio were taken in the eastern strip which is relatively narrow and receives more rain than the centre and west of the country, not counting periods of drought. At my level of proficiency photography is a waiting game i.e. being out often in the early morning and evening in the hope of catching some good light. That's not too difficult when one is retired and lives in a place when the span of day light hours is never too long. On the other hand, dawn and dusk don't last long here. When the light is good, quick work is pretty much essential. I hope that you do visit Australia sometime. If you do, you'll have a great time with your camera.
Cheers,
Bob
