Spoonbill with fish

By Glostopcat
A spoonbill that visited Slimbridge Wetlands Centre for a few days last week in the process of catching a fish on the tack piece area of the reserve. I guess this one will qualify for Simon Fletcher's long running lunch series. This shot was taken on Friday morning, unfortunately the spoonbill did not come close to any of the hides, so the best I could manage was long range efforts such as this. I went back to the Wetlands Centre yesterday as the weather was set fair, but the spoonbill had already departed for pastures new so I did not manage any more shots. I did meet epzer Derek Lees, "DerekL" though, albeit briefly, I'm sure he'll be treating us all to some shots of the cranes that are nesting close to the Martin Smith Hide in the coming daysWink It's back to work again today after a short break so I'll endeavour to catch up with what you've all been up to recently when time permits. A combination of work, jobs to do at home and the recent good weather has meant that time spent on here has been rather limited recently.

SmileSmileSmile Wow, Ed, that's most definitely a 'Lunch' and a half shot...!!! SmileSmileSmile
Excellent timing here. Spoonbills don't normally 'share' their catches like this.

The bird only came up close to the hide on the Saturday unfortunately, the day I was up at Prestbury Hill photographing green hairstreaks and duke of burgundys. Slimbridge on a Saturday is usually far too busy and it is often difficult to get into some of the hides, plus the place is full of screaming kids running around scaring the wildlife away!Tongue
Lucky you to see this bird, it's so beautiful. Great shot of it considering the circumstances! Well done!
