Spotted Sandpiper (Actitis macularia)

By teocali
Another from our Cape Cod trip in May - the Spotted Sandpiper (Actitis macularia). Length 7.5ins Wingspan 15ins Weight 1.4oz. Fairly uncommon, frequenting ponds and streams. Usually solitary. Constantly raises and lowers rear body, rather like a wagtail and its crouching appearance accentuated by its relatively short legs and neck. Relatively dark and unpatterned above, with a dark patch on the side of the breast.

Thank you all for your C&Cs on yesterday's Hover Fly - very much appreciated as ever Smile

A superb capture, Sylvia, and a wonderful pose. Reminds me of the wonderful film of the same name, starring Burton and Taylor Smile Carol

Very nice crisp shot, Sylvia, the plumage detail the tops, a nice tilt to the head and with a nice twinkle in it's eye.

Beautiful capture Sylvia, especially like the catchlight in the eye.

Can't think why you didn't have much success with the moths last night?.....I know it was a little chilly, but not that cold. I didn't bother last night because of the weather forecast was for heavy showers, and they weren't kidding either! It thundered down in the night and it's still raining here at the moment. which is a bummer as we were going to take a trip down to the Levels today.....Grrrrrr......Keep at it though mate and I'm sure you'll start getting some good results soon.....

I like the sideways glance of the bird and you have fabulous clarity in the plumage markings Sylvia.
