Squacco heron (Ardeola ralloides)

Named after its piercing ‘squawk’ call , the squacco heron is a small, chunky bird with a short, thick bill, warm buff-brown back and snowy white wings, breast, tail and belly.
The squacco heron is mainly active at sunrise and sunset, sleeping during the day and night in large sheltered groups .
