'St Crispin's Day

By patspeirs
St Crispins Day - 25th October 1944’

“He that outlives this day, and comes safe home” *

A struggling B17, with one engine out and another running rough, limps home to base in the UK escorted by a Mustang, ‘little friend’. The early onset of winter in 1944 made the operations of the 8th Air force that little bit more difficult as they came to grips with European weather as well as the hazards of operational flying. The crew, undoubtedly now one of ‘the band of brothers’, will surely acknowledge the full impact of the quotation as home comes into view.

Image is a multiple composite constructed using several background scenes and aircraft photographs from the Duxford ‘Legends’ airshow.

* Henry V - Shakespeare.

It really is so hard to believe that this is a composite image, Pat: it really looks the genuine thing. So beautifully done as always, and with your accompanying story making it all the more real.

Such a realistic image. This one truly captures the imagination and speaks to the feeling of those brave souls returning safely.

Superbly done with exactly the right colours for the occasion. I just hpe they'd got the runway cleared ready. I hope it wasn't trying to land on grass!

Superbly worked, as always, Pat and like Ronnie I find it very hard to believe this is a composite image. Terrifically atmospheric with brilliant dialogue to match. Fabulous work.
