St Mary's Cathedral, Hildesheim

By EveLine1
Constructed in the romanesque style St Mary's was completely destroyed in WW II but rebuilt in the 1950s and is now part of the Unesco Site Hildesheim (together with one other church). An absolute must see are the Bernward Doors and column from the early 11th century. I love the different styles in churches; even in the middle ages the same style could differ a lot depending on where the building was built . I had never seen this type of central tower flanked by two smaller towers making it look like a 'building on top of a building'...

Thanks so much for all your remarks, votes and especially the awards bestowed by Tony, Christopher and Glenn! I am so grateful for your wonderful response.

All my best and take care!
Viola

An impressive and fascinating edifice, really well depicted.

The difference in materials from region to region can have a significant aesthetic effect, too. The sandstone used in medieval construction here in south Northumberland is yellow; in Carlisle in the north-west - only 80 km away - it is red. Even local bricks used to differ, often from village to village, until dreary conformity took over in the 20th century.
I do like the variegated tones of the brickwork visible in Hildesheim, yet another cathedral I would like to visit now hat you have introduced it!
