St Mary's Chapel

By mrswoolybill
A ruined chapel, hidden in the woods at Jesmond Dene.
In the Middle Ages it was a major site of pilgrimage, after the Virgin Mary appeared to some rather startled Geordies at a nearby well. Newcastle's Pilgrim Street follows the route that pilgrims walked from the river up to the woods.
Now it houses a number of strange little personal shrines.
Thanks for looking,
Moira

Holy Mother of God!
seriously, a fine location and a beautiful shot(s), and as Alan aptly noted, it's great "how the tree completes the arch"

Startled some Geordies? Those stout, stoic and proud men? Must have been the medieval Newcastle Brown.

Like Alan, my eye was instantly attracted to the tree.

Your image shows solemness and serenity. I'm not sure I would be just startled if something apparated in front of me there.

An interesting chapel especially with history attached. I like how the bent tree on the right almost completes the arch. Great mono image, Moira.

Well seen, like your pov, the way nature is reclaiming its position and in collaboration forming the arch to frame the remains...Very Good Shot...

Blimey! I'm just back here - things have moved fast! Thanks to Sue, William, Charles, Kathi, Malc, Ken, Ollie, Ian, Marie and Cliff for their UAs.
This was taken on the same day as yesterday's organist. A very satisfying visit...

It does have a very spiritual air about it. Invites you to go through the arch to another dimension of reality.
