St Mary's Church

By TrevBatWCC
Dating from 1110, St Mary's Church greets you on reaching the top of the 199 steps. I've taken many photos of it whilst in Whitby, so went for something a little different and framed it through the gateway at the far end of the graveyard.

Techie stuff: see Exif
Single Raw image processed in Adobe Camera Raw, tweaked in Photomatix Pro and Elements 6

I like your choice of pov, Trev, enlivened as it is by the shadow on the left. I'm amazed to see the churchyard empty!
A well thought-out and different composition.

Bill

This is the best shot of St Mary's I've ever seen, beautifully composed right down to the balance of one and two gateposts and the lead-in shadow.

Using the gateposts for a frame is a good idea, allowing the cobbles and paved pathway to lead one on to the church: very well arranged shot, Trev.

A very detail and informative pre0narrative, and an image truly made by the hand of god, with a little help from your good self.

All those curves on the church make it look as if you've manipulated it to be strange and weird. But up large we can see it's an optical illusion. Really lovely work here Trev.

The view through the gates works really well in giving added interest to this shot and the path gives a great lead-in. Nice work Trev.

One of my favourite locations, Trev, and a view I've not seen before, especially without tourists/goths etc. I like the glimpse of coast behind putting it in its setting.

I think after climbing 199 steps Trev,
I would be a permanent feature in the graveyard !!
Good shot.

I didn't recognise the church until I read the description, I love the composition and use of the posts to lead you in to the picture. For me the signs spoilt it a bit but there is not an awful lot you can do about them, unless you fancy a long cloning exercise!

Maybe worth trying it in black and white as well. I've photographed this church myself in mono and it looks great (It's in my portfolio somewhere!)

Great effort.

Now I don't know this location, but I have to say I would find it hard to believe that there is a better pov to be found than this. Spot on choice, Trev, and your iconic processing is so well suited the subject.

I like the way you've framed the church with the entrance, Trev, and that great shadow in the foregroound.
