I remember a school trip to Whitley Bay, long long ago, and climbing those stairs….
it was a bit scary.

When a beautiful young girl walked into the lighthouse, looked up, and smiled, a lighthouse keeper immediately fell for her.
Very sad.
There were no rails when us schoolkids went up. Crazy.
The same school took us along Striding Edge on Helvellyn, up to the summit, then scree-running down to Thirlmere. We were given no instruction of any kind, and wore our normal shoes and school uniforms. Miraculously, there were no casualties, and the sun shone all day. At the time we thought nothing of it, which is maybe just as well. It was 1963-4.
Sounds unbelievable, but it's a true story.
