On the last full day in Dorset we had a couple of half day coach outings. The day was rather cooler than previous and dull, but at least it stayed fine! The morning outing took us on a tour around the Dorset countryside, stopping off here at the tiny village of Moreton. It has this beautiful and unusual church, square shaped rather than rectangular, except for a semi-circular bit on one side.
St Nicholas' church is world famous for its engraved glass windows and for the grave of Lawrence of Arabia. The original dedication to St Magnus Martyr was changed to St Nicholas in 1490. Bombing on 8th October 1940 extensively damaged the church. Created as part of the refurbishment following the war, the 13 engraved glass windows (1955-85) are by Sir Laurence Whistler, who revived glass engraving in the 20th century. Lawrence of Arabia (T E Lawrence) was buried in the nearby graveyard following his funeral in the church.
V2 and V3 were taken a few minutes before, showing the church's exterior.
