Lead image is Gateshead & District Tramways Co. No. 5. Built in 1927 and operational until 1951 in Gateshead. Bought by British Railways for use on the Grimsby & Immingham line and operated until 1961.

V1 Leeds City Transport No. 602. It was one of two prototype trams that were built in 1953 at a time when serious thought was being given to the development of a new tram subway system serving Leeds city centre as a way of avoiding the severe traffic congestion that it already suffered from. If the ambitious project had been completed, it would have seen most of Leedsís extensive fleet of ageing double-deck trams being replaced by a new fleet of 200 continental-style single-deckers like 602 at a cost of £2 million. The tram was not a success and was withdrawn from service in 1957

What a pity they didn't take on😁

Two fine tram images, Phil, the version looking sleeker. I was brought up in Leeds, living in Hunslet. I don't really remember single deckers, but do remember double-deckers very well, using them to travel into town as they passed only about 150 yards away from our house. 😃👍

Edinburgh reintroduced trams a few years ago, which cost a vast amount of money, but a great success, and now being extended to other parts of the town. The trams have moved on from your one, Internet access now standard. It is still interesting to see, what we used to put up with in the past.
