Starlings Gathering

By PaulLiley
I snapped this a few days ago. This flock hadn't quite formed a murmuntation (at least I think how you spell it?) but there quite a few of them. They are ravenously feeding on my garden feeders at the moment as Winter really sweeps in with vengeance. Don't know whether anyone else agrees but I was fascinated by Autumnwatch (BBC) this year and having those starlings and the pet pigeon (featured in many film clips) in the studio made good entertaining viewing.

Think Starlings must be making a come-back as I spotted quite a number sitting on overhead cables a couple of days ago. I know their numbers had dropped dramatically for a few years. Looks like you spotted quite a crowd of them in-flight here.

Thanks Ann, yes I think they are making a come back. First dusting of snow this morning (saturday) so I filled the feeders to the top and within minutes must have had about 30+ land in the garden. It was like a Hitchcock movie. The house sparrows put up a good determined fight though and the coaltits, bluetits and great tits nipped in and out dodging the chaos to grab some food.

' Murmuration '

This is an excellent shot. Bright colours and the blur on the birds is entirely appropriate to their motion.
