Still Life with Figs and Wine

By flowerpower59
Anyone interested in still life and particularly the Dutch Master style might like to have a look at RobDoudall's images here on EPZ and also on his website. They are stunning. Thanks to him I learned a new term:

Tenebrism, from Italian tenebroso ("dark, gloomy, mysterious"), also occasionally called dramatic illumination, is a style of painting using profoundly pronounced chiaroscuro, where there are violent contrasts of light and dark, and where darkness becomes a dominating feature of the image.

This image is a focus stack of 3 images done in the traditional, long-hand way layering the images and erasing the less sharp areas of each one.
Ideally (again) I would have liked the b/g to have been darker but am still finding it difficult to blend anything in the image with a lighter edge. Have to keep at it!

All the work has been worthwhile. Many thanks for the informative commentary.

I'm just waiting for some bright(or not so bright) spark to say it's too dark, and then try to brighten the image.Wink

Rather nice... I've seen it before I think.
Do you have Nik Viveza2 ? ...that's the easiest way to darken the background without changing the rest of the image.
I'll upload a mod to illustrate.
Perhaps Willie used the same method, but I've left the colour balance as you had it.

Another great shot Fiona.

The mod I thought a strong b&w. This was done by opening image and duplicate layer. Change the blend to soft light.
Now from the bottom of the layers panel open black and white and adjust sliders to suite. A very quick way to a strong b&w.

Brilliant, love it, and especially like Willie's first modification.
I've been enjoying RobDougall's still life images, too.

Love this - great composition and I love the folds in the material, they really help with the sense of depth. And congratulations on the lemon peel - I fail at each attempt!
