Storm at sea

By Mari
Taken at Southerndown. I had just dropped my son off at the beach for his surf lifeguard practice, looked out to sea and there was an amazing storm with very grey sky and lightning, took a few shots and went home. My son said half an hour later he was in the sea surrounded by huge hail stones and lightning - needless to say he didn't stay in long!! The light was amazing though.

If anyone can advise me (through mods maybe?)on how to straighten a barrelled horizon - (do I use the tranform tool?) I'd be very grateful.

Fantastic looking beach - horizon capture! Love the action look it gets from those action filled clouds. Sry cant help you with the barrelled horizon.

What great light and so well captured! Not sure about the barreled horizon, how did it get there? I would be tempted to leave it as a feature. What a shame you didn't get any lightening! That would have been the cherry on an already great cake.

Great shot, with or without the curved horizon. The only advise on straightening it that I can give is to play with each of the things in edit-transform folder and see if any help.

Mari,
How do you do it?? There is always so much detail in you compositions it is like a storyboard. The detail on the foam, sand ,SKY and rocks are STUNNING. And just for good measure the light reflecting off the water on the left hand side lights up the scene. A++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Hi Mari

Get the panotools plug-in for photoshop - it has a distortion correction tool that is perfect for this kind of thing.

Wonderful moody light - it's simplicity is it's strength.

I wouldn't dare to advise you on how to do landscapes Mari, because your far far better than I could ever wish to be.....What I will say is this, it's a really strong and powerful image as it is. But I'd try and straighten out the horizon if I could, rather like Elcid has done in his modded version!.....

Regards and hope all is well with you......Ade

Hi Mari, first off, this is great. As for the horizon, I dont think it has much barrelling to it, think it needs 0.73% CW rotation as it is straight (though not level) from the left edge to approx way across, from there on there seems to be a shadow area causing the impression that the horizon is barrelled. I may be wrong but that is how it looks to me.

Did you crop some of the right hand side? If not, the high spot of the horizon should be central if this is barrelling.

Adrian.

When using the lower end of a wide angle lens, one will get a broadened perspective on the expected viewpoint.
The resulting image will contain a dimension not normally seen by the naked eye.

But, all that said - at least it's straight-ish!

Talk about a moody shot! Whew!
As far as earlier comments on the 'barreled horizon' it might just be the darker light on the right making it look curved. And on the comment about the dark middle, the clouds in teh middle are darker so the reflection in the middle is darker also. Nice one.
