Storm Coming In

By Mbopp50
A startling cloud formation over a very small airport. The sky all around was completely clear. I thought it almost looked like an atomic bomb cloud.

It is an excellent spot, it looks as though there could possibly be some buildings or something below not allowing to get any lower because I find theres too much empty space above the cloud. Excellent cloud formation though.

It does look like the dreaded mushroom. Normally I say these are stock shots. This is, but it also stands very well on it's own.

Amazing cloud formation, Martha, and it does look like a nuclear explosion.
I love unusual clouds, and this certainly falls into that category.
I'd like to have seen the whole of the mushroom shape within your frame, and also some more of the land in silhouette.
You have an expanse of plain sky above your cloud, so you simply needed to lower your camera a bit.
There is a site called the Cloud Appreciation Society, and you might enjoy looking at these .

Wow what a cloud. As a paid-up member of the above-named association it's really my kind of shot. I'm never averse to giving full emphasis to bold cloud shapes in the frame, and often with only a small amount of foreground. However I think there's usually a critical balace between the cloudscape and the foreground context. In this case I think you needed to include a bit more of the foreground to give some context as to what the cloud is looming over, and to give a sense of its scale. I would also as Pamela said have liked to see the whole of the cloud, and in this case it would look great placed exactly symmetrically in the frame.

I agree also re losing a lot of the sky above the cloud as it doesn't add anything

I want to thank you guys! Your comments have been awesome! I guess I ought to explain a couple of things. I am a travel nurse and this was taken right before I had to leave for work so I couldn't get to a better angle. I intentionally tried to limit the foreground because it is...well...ugly. Lots of power lines, street lights, bar signs, a storage lot, etc. I actually took a couple of shots including all that and was not happy with it at all. The reason the whole cloud wasn't included, is that a power station intrudes just off the frame. If I was any better at this I could probably have made all that look interesting. The cloud was just too cool to let the shot go. Thank you all so much for the comments and help!
