Storm on the Firth of Clyde

By Irishkate
Another image from the storm on the Clyde a few day's ago - nothing like the storms you've had in England but I'm not often out with my camera on stormy days.
A sincere thanks to 12 different members who took the time to demonstrate their editing skills on yesterday's upload. Whilst we would all like to capture a scene perfectly in camera, editing is as much of skill as taking the image and the varied mods done for me yesterday show just what can be achieved.

You have captured the prevailing conditions very well, Kate, as I feel the cold and the ind just viewing this scene.

While I agree with what you say about trying to get it right in the camera to start with, and that's always preferable, when you've got scenery like this ... well, that's 90% of the job done, irrespective of what's done to it afterwards. Your original, and digital_boi's mod, are both beautiful.

Very moody Kate, a great capture but the F/G rocks are a little to dark for me, I would have upped the shadows a little to bring out a little more detail in the rocks.( I use LR4)

Lovely atmospheric image Kate.
Storm clouds overhead but a hint of optimism with the sun peeking over the distant hills - wonderful stuff. GrinGrinGrin

Hi Kate, I agree the foreground is little dark and I find the sky lacks just a little definition in the clouds. In my MOD I've used my trusty levels to isolate specific areas and adjusted the levels in each to alter the contrast to give better detail in the chosen areas.

Let me know what you think

Kate, I like this just as it is. I know that there are changes that can be made and I see that others are offering great ideas, but for me this is good!

Your capture is excellent Kate as are the two mods - a lot depends on personal preference I think. Hope you were well wrapped up when you took this - bit of a change to Oz.Wink

A mean and moody seascape, Kate. You've given your camera a lot to do shooting into the sun. This is where the ND grads come into their own, holding back the exposure in the sky so you can get detail in the shadows. I put a mod up but on seeing it I think the first two are better Tongue

An excellent image Kate, composed very well. It isn't very often I do a mod but I liked this one that much I couldn't resist. Just had a play with the curves on different areas of the image. I tried also a luminosity mask to try and get the sea on the sand to reflect a little. I think digital_boi has done the best one but the sky from Dave is fantastic.
I have still got lots to learn in the processing side of things but the best way I learnt was youtube. There is loads of photoshop tutorials on there.Grin
Already looking forward to your next imageWink

I really like this, Kate, your composition is spot on and the mood comes across really well.
Couldn't resist a mod ( obviously! Grin )...I've just darkened the sky a little in Levels, mostly by raising the left slider ( black point ) and I've also tried to make the lighting a little more dramatic. I didn't bring out so much detail in the foreground rocks because to be honest I think that would work against the mood of the image.... a bit of mystery is a good thing!
I've also done a second mod which is a fairly straight B&W conversion from my first mod. Hope you like them.

Alan

Edit: I've added the merest hint of sepia to the mono, just to warm the blacks.

A beautiful "scape" Kate, lovely depth and lots of drama.. It is interesting to see the mods concentrating on different aspects..Love all of them, including yours!!

Great composition with the rocks leading you into the picture. Again making good use of the low light. Well done Kate.
