Street vendor selling live king cobras on Saigon street corner!

By RobLouw
While photographing 'bikes of burden' in Saigon, Vietnam I heard a bit of a commotion behind me. When I turned around there was this street vendor selling live king cobras (or perhaps more aptly their blood) on a busy street corner in the back-packer area of the City. The commotion was a result of the gathering crowd. She was only a few meters behind me! I swung the camera around and grabbed a few shots before this hapless snake came to an abrupt end. It was slit open and its blood collected in a glass jar. The blood was sold to a passer by, no doubt for a handsome profit! In the large sack were a few more cobras and in the small sack were dozens of smaller (no doubt equally venomous) snakes. Imagine a scene like this on the corner of Oxford and Regent street in London!
I have blurred the background and converted it to monochrome in Photoshop in order to let the vendor and her wares stand out clearly from the background.
Visitors to Saigon beware!

Great image, but I'll avoid saying "charming" Smile

I'd always imagined king cobras to be much larger than the specimen shown here.
A very good shot and the processing works well to emphasize the scene.
the colours are very striking.
It wouldn't work in Oxford Street; but it's their culture, in their country, not ours. They would, be doubt be bemused by some of the things that we consider normal in Oxford or Regent Street, and is part of our culture.
