Sunset Salute

By Minty805
This is a picture which could have been the best image from several weeks of travel last year - if only I'd had my camera with me.
We'd crossed Lake Wakatipu, New Zealand, by modern ferry, from Queenstown to a sheep station further up, planning to cycle 14km back around the far side of the lake, to be picked up again by the historic steamship TSS Earnslaw. Not having cycled for almost 30 years and after only very little practice, and not wanting to fall off on top of my camera, I left it at the hotel.
The ride accomplished without major mishap, we returned across the lake on the Earnslaw and wandered round the lakeside, dodging outbreaks of heavy rain. Then the lovely old ship set sail back up the lake, disappearing majestically into a dramatic scene, with the setting sun's rays breaking through the heavy clouds.
Well, you do what you can in such circumstances, so I grabbed my phone. Excellent though that has turned out to be, it has the equivalent of a 28mm lens, where I desperately needed a short telephoto, hence the heavy crop. Contrary to common advice on here, this picture is probably viewed small, and I've added a broad margin, partly because I like the effect, but also to reduce the visible pixelation.
TSS Earnslaw was launched in 1912, having been built in Dunedin, dismantled and transported by rail to the lake. She still operates today, carrying admiring tourists in glorious scenery, and over the years has carried royalty from several countries.
Thanks for looking.

It's just typical isn't it, a lot of your best shots are when the camera's back at home or hotel! 😬 A wonderful dramatic scene, Allan, with the boat perfectly positioned in the frame 👍 Interesting story too 😀

Stunning atmospheric landscape. The boat disappearing into the mist is a real bonus.

Still a stunning image, Allan. No use bemoaning what could have been, if only I had..., what is done, is done.
A useful photographic lesson learned, perhaps?

Super image with sun ray's lighting up the boat and with it billowing smoke it has great atmosphere. Interesting narrative as well.

Thanks Malc. I told the tale for a bit of a yarn and in case anyone wondered why I had put half a dozen pixels up. You're absolutely right, of course - next time I'll just wrap the camera in something soft in case I fall off onto it.

Great light and drama don't need pixels or details. I'm sure Mr Turner would agree, well, if he knew what a pixel wasSmile
And the composition is spot on,

A beautiful image Allan. As a Kiwi this place is close to my heart. You have done a brilliant job of capturing the atmosphere here, and in several other NZ shots. Well done.
