Sunset sky over Filfla

By alistairfarrugia
Took some sunset-themed shots at Wied iz-Zurrieq, Malta, and in this one I composed the shot with Filfla contrasting starkly against the background sky. Edited this picture to further highlight the contrast between the orangy sky and the wonderful blue seas of Malta! Smile Yep, I feel patriotic right about now.

I'm aware the horizon is too close to Filfla's left tip, and the image is a tad oversharpened. What else could be better please?

Having taken your reservations into account, this is still a very fine image: such a simple composition but a good example of less being more.

An interesting and well composed upload. I have offered a mod where I adjusted levels etrc and then used a bit of noise reduction.

A lovely minimalist sea scape. Pleasing colours.
You pointed out your self about Island touching the sky.
There appear to be slight halos around the island.
Malta looks like a great place from the pictures you have posted.
Always thinking about a visit but never made it

Thanks Focus for the mod - my only concern with what you've done is that the lighting around the island seems a bit more pronounced than elsewhere- was this intentional? Otherwise, I love the end result - really improves the image.

Ian - I think I am responsible for that - I sharpened without correcting the edges with some slight blurring (typically works for me). Will try modify it myself later drawing inspiration from the mod by Focus.

As regards coming over to visit us, it would be nice. There's plenty to photograph here and it's all within 30-40 mins drive.

Not intentional, perhaps I should have spent more time over the mod, but I was just trying to give a quick response.

A lovely scene Alistair. Long exposure has smeared the clouds, but it works. I agree that the island appears over sharpened, as does the horizon line, and it looks better a little less soft. Be careful sharpening.

Ive uploaded a mod with that done. Also added a small amount of sky just to get the horizon on a third; gave the sky a little more contrast; and lifted some detail from the island using the shadow tool in CS.

heres the malta Photo Society site: www.maltaphotographicsociety.org/

My friend and EPZ member Mario Mifsud is the secretary, - you could hook up with him. His member name is dusfilm.

Hope you like the mod,

regards

Spelling mistake there Willie, unless your friend Mario is a different guy from my friend Mario - his member name is DUSFIM. lol

Hehe.. yeah, Dusfim is Mifsud reversed, his surname. Focus, rest assured I appreciate your mod, I just pointed that lighting issue to verify whether it was intentional or not. Photomatix, for instance, can do such lighting effects through the program, I typically don't use it but I wanted to check whether it was something of the sort there or an oversight. I do get the jist of your mod and love it.

Willie, I will consider joining the society. Photography's ever growing on me and maybe it's high time I enroll!

Thanks once more for your great feedback and mod! Smile

A decent sunset. The over sharpening is a little too great as you know. Nice image but the island is not a terribly interesting shape and it is the subject. A silhouetted church or tower on the island would be great. No t likely to appear though.

I prefer V1 mainly because the water in V2 looks un naturally green for deep water. V2 is good image though. There is a line along horizon on V2 which did not show on V1

Ian, you're absolutely right there...was a bit careless with the tones there. Good point raised, appreciated!

I like V1 I guess.

All mods offer a great idea, but yours is also really good.

Will try and find some time and go take a few pics of the tiny rock myself in the coming weeks.

Bravo mate.
