Sunset walker

By Madoldie
This was taken yesterday evening while out on Fistral beach, I was playing around with the aperture settings when this fella walked across my line of vision and I thought that I would put him in the photograph.

My immediate thought is too much compression, or too much processing...

There is an odd fringing effect in the area round the sun, and there's a halo all along the horizon and round the figure. Would it be possible to upload an unprocessed version? I'd like to leave a mod (possibly cropping a little at the top and playing with Levels and Saturation) until there's a version that hasn't been processed to work from.

Basic settings are pretty sound, though the -1 compensation won't have helped anything but the sun's disc. This shot would benefit from being shot as a RAW file, and processed to control the high contrast range.

Same here. It's a good composition, and well timed. I like the way the man's head rises above the horizon but he is looking down. The angle in the knee, stepping forward, is perfect.

But this definitely looks over-processed and over-sharpened to me. Tell-tale signs: there's a light halo along the horizon and around the man's head, there's banding around the sun, and the sea horizon is razor-sharp. Think about looking out to sea, the horizon is soft, mysterious. It's mystery that is lacking for me.

Could you upload the original please?

Thank you both, I will upload the original tomorrow as I've been at work today and very tired. I look forward to seeing you're modifications. Can you also upload more than one photograph a day to the critique gallery, I know that you can only do one a day to the main gallery.
Thanks for your time,

Mat, you can only upload once a day to the Critique Gallery, but you can add the original as a version (you have Plus membership), or as a modification. When something has been significantly processed it often helps a lot if we can see the original.

Thanks for the original photograph, Mat.

Looking at it, it's clear that your processing has caused the halos, because their absent from the original. There's a little bit of banding, which I suspect is due to quite a lot of compression of the file. You may have that camera sent to a relatively low quality, or you may have chosen a more compressed option when saving the JPEG.

I've done a mod correcting the horizon as you did with the original, tweaking levels, and not doing any sharpening. My crop's a bit different from yours, but that the variety rather than anything else.
