Surprise View

By ghibby
Another from Fountains Abbey.

This was taken towards the end of the day from the water gardens looking towards the abbey. The tranquillity afforded by the still water was what attracted me to this composition. It was taken from Surprise View.

The low light of the shadows of the scene when viewed through my viewfinder meant that it had to be either a blended image or more likely another candidate for HDR imagery. I bracketed by two stops around my base exposure which was set at one stop over. Once I had processed the mid exposure in Camera RAW I applied the same settings to the other dark and light images before merging to HDR in Photoshop CS2. I uses the local adaptation method with low radius and low threshold settings to maximise the detail. I used a tone curve to give a bright image with a full histogram to ensure I had plenty of room to make processing modifications.

As it happened all that was needed was a diffuse overlay layer (with a luminance mask to restrict its effect to the mid tones and highlights) to bring out some more contrast and saturation and give a bit more ‘pop’ to the image. The only other adjustment was a curves adjustment later to boost the shadow contrast a little.

I also edge sharpened the flattened image to bring out as much detail as possible without incurring any sharpening halos.

Exposure 1/10, 1/40 and 1/160 Sec @F9.0

Hope you like, Ben

Sounds like a lot of work but worth it when you get a picture like this.

A lovely tranquil scene with gorgeous light and reflections, beautifully composed with the river meandering through the image.
